About The Event

Course Overview

The Diagnostic Track POCUS Certification Course is an intensive 3-day workshop designed to equip participants with the Diagnostic Track Independent Practitioner (IP) certification from the Canadian Point Of Care Ultrasound Society (CPoCUS).


This comprehensive course includes:

  • Review of Scanning Techniques (Diagnostic Track)

  • Completion of Required Scans (under direct 1:1 supervision)

  • Certification Examinations (CPoCUS IP)



Learning Objectives

Participants will achieve proficiency in performing the following POCUS examinations:

  • Gallbladder

    • Identification of gallstones

    • Sonographic signs of acute cholecystitis

  • Renal/Bladder

    • Detection of hydronephrosis and stones

    • Evaluation of urinary retention

  • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

    • Diagnosis of lower limb DVT

  • Ocular

    • Diagnosis of retinal detachment, posterior vitreous hemorrhage, lens dislocation, globe rupture

Pre-course Requirements

  1. Register as a non-certifying member at https://cpocus.ca. Then Review the CPoCUS Diagnostic Curriculum including both:

    - Section 1 (Basic Physics and Knobology).

    - Section 2 (Advanced Scanning Skills).

  2. Watch all instructional videos provided

  3. Complete the Maintenance of Competency quizzes (strongly recommended)

Course Schedule

  • Day 1: 7:30 AM - 6:00 PM | Technique review & hands-on sessions

  • Day 2: 7:30 AM - 6:00 PM | Practical sessions (Standardized patients)

  • Day 3: 7:30 AM - 6:00 PM | Scanning practice & examinations (visual, written, practical)


Note: The Schedule may change. Any modifications will be communicated to participants prior to the course.


Practical Sessions

  • Hands-on scanning sessions in pairs

  • Scanning duration per station starts at 12 minutes, decreasing over time

  • Regular partner rotations

Examination Process

Participants must pass the following CPoCUS examinations:

  • Written Examination: Online multiple-choice (85% minimum passing score)

  • Practical Examination: Live model assessment (100% accuracy required)

  • Visual Examination: Computer-based image interpretation, 3-4 hours (85% minimum passing, critical components mandatory)

Prerequisite: Active CPoCUS account with valid membership.

Examination Retake Policy

  • One retake for written and practical exams available during course

  • Additional retakes and visual exam retakes require independent arrangement and additional fees

Certification Process

Upon successful completion, an application for Independent Practitioner Certification is submitted to CPoCUS. Participants are responsible for completing pre-course requirements, scans, and passing examinations for certification.


Recommended Scan Numbers (direct supervision required):

  • Gallbladder: 40 scans

  • Renal: 10 scans per kidney

  • Bladder: 20 scans

  • DVT: 40 scans

  • Ocular: 20 scans
